“Missing in Action”
By: Gloria Kabamba
Concept Statement:
African Americans are grossly underrepresented within architectural and design education and practice. Black designers play a large role in creating more equitable spaces in urban communities. In order to advance their valuable thoughts and improve the future of the built environment, there must be better access and solid design education which would support and engage a larger crowd of young people towards the profession.
Problem:
Preliminary research reveals only 5 extra curricular opportunities are only offered by primary and secondary schools, universities, and non-profit organizations. Students are only exposed to architecture and design through after school programs , mentorships, summer exploratory programs, college prep programs, and weekend programs.
